Christmas Eve

Day 216

24 December 2009

We went to the Nativity at St. Mary's church in Swanage, this afternoon. It was packed and included Dusty the donkey, a sheep and her two lambs, and the children forming the nativity scene, not to mention my friend's baby playing the role of Jesus. Very cute, so happy christmas, everyone!

Cooking and cleaning

Day 215
23 December 2009

I finally made the cake today, but decided that,as I've left it far too late to cover with marzipan and icing, that I'd make a few and give them away as presents. Here are the first two.

We made chocolates today, using orange oil and mixed spice with glace cherries to xmas it up. We made an unbelievable amount of mess, chocolatey fingerprints and footprints were everywhere - but we had fun!

Wrapping

Day 214
21 December 2009

The present-wrapping started, today...I am rubbish at wrapping anything, so it's something I really don't enjoy!
I am so behind on everything, because of getting the kitchen sorted out. So to all my friends who haven't received a card from us this yearm please don't take it personally, I just haven't had the time! Put another way: I am still soaking the fruit in brandy that I photographed two weeks ago to make the christmas cake!

Panto!

Day 213
20 December 2009

We went to the Pavilion in Bournemouth, today, to see Snow White with our friends. It was a great afternoon for the girls, who danced and sang and really got into the whole thing. It was really cute to watch them jumping about with excitement!

Later on at home, we used our oven for the first time. Well, to make porridge, anyway!

Ahhhhhhhh!

Day 212
19 December 2009

Strange halo-effect...?

Today, 15 months after moving into our house, and 11 months of dust, workmen, planning, lost weekends and hard graft, we have a kitchen. I can't stop smiling, each time I walk into the room. For both of us, the moment we felt like something momentous was happening was when John Wood, the electrician, connected the power to the lighting, and suddenly we had light.
There is still a bit of work to do, but to be able to use the space that was once 4 rooms in one, derelict and unused for perhaps 20 years, felt suddenly full of life and happy. Our Christmas present to eachother, and to our long-suffering house!

Nativity Scene

Day 211
18 December 2009

It was my daughter's first nativity this year. The school had a concert rather than the play. It was very impressive. The older children played a variety of instruments, ranging from fiddle to clarinet, flute and guitar. I was impressed with them all. Reception class came out towards the end, and sang Away in A Manger, and Twinkle Twinkle, Little Star. Apart from a bit of a to-do between one of the shephards and a donkey, all went well!

Nearly Christmas

Day 210
17 December 2009

My daughter made this at school, which was to put all sorts of lovely little treats from the school. It's great! I don't think I got anything like this at school...

Kids' Christmas party

Day 209
16 December 2009

It was the school's Christmas party, today, and the children dressed up. My daughter dressed as a pirate, along with the elaborate hat, pictured, which was created out of a charity shop binge to find fancy dress stuff for the dressing up box.

Nearly there!

Day 208
15 december 2009

Real Wood Flooring are sorting out our worktops today, and it's been a day of sawdust and noise. Exciting stuff, eh?

What's the Point?

Day 207
14 December 2009

This car has been dumped. Anyone can see that, surely the fact that it's been there for weeks without moving, and has a flat tyre, is surely a sign that it's not parking tickets that are needed, but a towruck and a car crusher? But no, the council parking people in their un-wisdom-ness decided to issue 3 tickets. They patrol the area regularly, they surely would have seen the car well before they decided to waste some ink and paper on the tickets they issued?

Keeping up the good work

Day 206
13 December 2009

Back to work on the kitchen, today, and this time it's the tiling that we're working on. We are hoping that the room will be ready for use by Christmas, but it's a lot of hard work and effort for everyone involved.

Putlake Christmas

Day 205
12 December 2009

This evening we went to Putlake farm for their Christmas fayre. The children from St Georges school sang at the beginning of the evening, whilst being peppered with snowflakes from a snow machine. We missed them! But we heard that they were very good.
The place was packed, and we saw lots of our friends and other people we knew. It reminded us once again of how when we first moved to the town we enjoyed the various events, but that we didn't know many of the young families. Today was the opposite, and it made us feel warm inside!

Secret Knitter

Day 204
11 December 2009

I am a knitter. Well, sort of. It all started a few months back, when I started to knit a cardigan for my Son. It was a tool to switch off my brain, to relax, but to keep busy at the same time.
Since then, I have knitted most of a jumper for my daughter (a very lovely lady at the wool shop in town helped by finishing the last bit of the collar off as the pattern had been incorrectly written and I couldn't follow it), a stripy scarf; and now another wintry cardi for my son. I hope that he will not have outgrown it by the time I finish it!
I feel slightly embarrassed to be announcing that I knit, because it seems knitting has such an old lady sort of attached stigma to it. It's not very rock and roll, is it?
I'm not brilliant at it, but I am learning. It's quite satisfying to make something and then use it, and to complete something rather than give up on it and stuff it in a bag for a few years, which is what I did with what turned out to be a hideous pattern for a teenaged knitter in the late 80's: a black and white striped unshaped jumper, with smaller different coloured knitted patches randomly sewn on to the front. I threw it away when I realised I had no taste.
So, my friends who thought they knew most things about me:
SURPRISE!!!
This is a 2x2 rib pattern. It's easy.

The remains of the Day

Day 203
10 December 2009

I spent most of the day in Bournemouth, trudging through shops looking for presents. The two main ones, the ones I'd rather have seen in the flesh rather than online, were nowhere to be seen. Arrgghh. I had my Son with me, too, and although he was very good, he did get bored at times. I had to take him out of the buggy, and this gave him the opportunity to suck on my chin, which to him, is just the best pasttime. I then spent the next half an hour with teeth marks and baby dribble on my face. Nice!
This evening we lit the fire, using the remains of yesterday's log to kick-start the warmth.
So tomorrow I'll need to head off into the realm of retail-ism once more, to find the two items I couldn't get today!

Kitchen progress

Day 202

09 December 2009

I've had a really busy day. today. This photo was taken at 10.15pm, after getting home from two meetings. Inspiration was thin on the ground. We've been continuing our kitchen build, and I saw these little curls of wood. Cute.

Creative

Day 201
08 December 2009

We have been making Christmas cards, today. We made lots of mess, but it was lots of fun!

Seasonal

Day 200
07 December 2009

We put a garland up in the hall, today. It makes the area warm and inviting, I would love to keep it there all year.
The blog has made it to day 200! Only 165 days to go to complete the year...

Christmas Cake

Day 199
06 December 2009

This afternoon we started off the cake-making procerss. The only problem, is that we've started too late, rather than the middle of November, when we should have. I prepared the fruit before dousing them in brandy to soak overnight. I just hope I don't leave it for a week before I make the cake, like I did last year...

Santa Claus is coming to town!

Day 198
05 December 2009

Swanage had their Christmas Fayre, today. There were trade and craft stalls, and Father Christmas, too.

veggie!

Day 197
04 December 2009

Yesterday this enormous carrot arrived in the veg box. it is nearly as big as my Son! Here he is, tucking into his dinner...

Baking

Day 196
03 December 2009

This evening we made Christmassy chocolate cakes for the school fayre, tomorrow. My daughter took pride of place for Whisking, her favourite bit - probably because I allow her to use the electric whisk.
I try not to think about the possible consequences of her using it.
After all, what's the worst that can happen...?

Decs in the School Hall

Day 195
02 December 2009

This afternoon the Parent Association and some of the children decorated the school hall and corridors in preparation for the school Christmas fayre later this week.
It's been a strange day. The rain has been really heavy, I got soaked at least twice. This morning I joined an apprehensive group of people from St Georges school in Langton, and Education Swanage, County Hall in Dorchester. We sat in on the public meeting to hear the fate of the first school, and the decision on whether a consultation would take place regarding secondary provision in Swanage.
The Council decided that St Georges should be "saved", which was a big relief. They also decided that Ed.Swan should meet with the council in January to discuss the proposal further before announcing whether or not a public consultation should take place.

The Start

Day 194
01 December 2009

My daughter started to write her letter to Father Christmas, today. She is learning to write in cursive style (joined-up handwriting), and she's enjoying it. She wanted to write the letter herself, so we started it today, and I think we'll be plugging away at it for the coming weeks until it's ready to be sent to the North Pole.

Save our Viable, Valuable and Sustainable Community

Day 193
30 November 2009

Today some of the children from Swanage Middle School, along with some younger children from Swanage, met at the school to show support for a secondary school in the town. Meridian and South today were invited to film the Education Swanage group campaigning for a secondary school and interview members about the upcoming cabinet meeting at Dorset County Council to decide whether or not a public consultation should take place in the town, as well as finalise the decision on the future of St Georges first school in Langton Matravers.

Keep On Running

Day 192
29 November 2009

I recently took up running, again, having run almost everywhere as a teenager because I didn't have a car, and I was always impatient to get to places.
This was, until I moved to London. Then I discovered the Tube, and pollution.
Nowadays, it's to get fit, blow away the cobwebs, and feel the fresh air on my face as I run off down the road. Not only that, but I feel that I need to show myself that I am capable of doing it, and making the time to do it is important. My family have a few long-distance runners milling about, so I also think that perhaps I should keep it up. The route I'm using at the moment is roughly 3 miles. Today I went the opposite way around it because the wind was too strong in the other direction!
Swanage is brilliant for running. There are lots of different gradients and routes to use; wonderful scenery; and lots of hills to challenge anyone. There is also a running group, called Purbeck Runners, who have been going for about a year or so, and are popular with lots of people. I know lots of mums who are runners, and two of my friends who ran the Marathon this year. So I suppose I've been inspired to start up again. But I doubt I'll be Marathon material for a very long time, if ever!

Seasons to be cheerful

Day 191
28 November 2009
This first picture is a bit confusing to me. My daughter is sitting down, wearing a t-shirt and jeans; and my husband is standing up wearing layers upon layers and a hat.
She loves wearing this t-shirt. Later on, it got splattered in mud as she tumbled over into a muddy patch of grass. She wears that t-shirt in the foulest of weathers. I think it makes her feel warm and sunny, because it's a summer carnival t-shirt that she obviously relates to. It is not unusual for her to look out of the window at the rain and the wind, and comment on what a beautiful day it is. I love her optimism! Here, she is genuinely warm and full of energy, running about in the cold, and refusing to put on a coat.

We went to Durlston with our friends this morning. Later on we went to Corfe Castle for the Christmas lights switch-on, which was a wet event. In fact, it was soaking wet, pouring with rain, and cold. We stayed in the Greyhound and had a gorgeous meal, briefly stood outside to watch the lights come on, and then returned to the pub.
These photos really don't do the village justice - it looked beautiful. I will go back another evening when it is not wet!

Mufty Day

Day 190
27 November 2009

The girls met up today, to start a fun weekend together. They were comparing their day at their schools, both taking part in mufty days. Tomorrow we've got all sorts of things planned, providing the weather isn't really grim!

Giving Thanks

Day 189
26 November 2009

I thought I'd mark Thanksgiving day today, although not in the true American Historical sense.
I feel very thankful for so much. I am thankful for a warm, dry home; enough food in our cupboards, clothes for my children, and lots of loving friends and family around me. I feel thankful that we are all healthy, and that we have our freedom. I feel thankful that China announced today that they pledge to reduce their carbon emissions by 40% by 2020, and that there are plenty of us out there who care about the planet and about the quality of life of those around them.
Thank you!

A night out

Day 188
25 November 2009

This evening we both went out for a rare night without the kids, to our school PA Christmas meal. It was a great night, we had fun, good food, and then came home to find my little boy had woken up whilst we were out. He was asleep on his Aunty's lap when we came home!
Oh Well, at least we got out for a bit, and thank you to my brother and sister in law for babysitting!

Purbeck: a vibrant community, a viable future

Day 187
24 November 2009
OK, so this photo was taken on a quiet, windy night in the town, but I was struggling a bit to come up with a fitting photo for today. It is an interpretation, however, of how residents in the town and the surrounding areas are able to influence their own presence by showing they are there, even if it appears that they are not!
I am referring to the latest developments in the future of our schools in Swanage and Langton Matravers. Today the Community Overview Committee (COC) met with Dorset County Council to vote on the decisions. Last week the council decided that they would not be considering a consultation period in January for people to discuss the options regarding a secondary school in Swanage. They also recommended two options for St Georges school in Langton, and St Marks' school in Swanage. One was to close both schools and open a primary on the middle school site when it closes; the other option was to keep St Georges in Langton and move St Marks' to the middle school site. Swanage First and St Mary's will remain on site and become primary schools.
John England was quoted on camera before the votes were placed, saying that there are a surplus number of places in the schools and therefore it was necessary to close schools in the area, despite growing evidence to the contrary.
Education Swanage were able to give a 10-minute presentation to the COC to show the councillors that Swanage could viably open a secondary school as part of a twin campus with the Purbeck School in Wareham. The votes were counted, and 39 out of 40 votes were in agreement with this. A fantastic result for Swanage, especially as DCC were asked to provide a consultation period for the town to look closely at secondary school provision. The recommendation for St Georges to remain in Langton was also made.
Next week DCC will go to the cabinet to make a final decision and it is very much hoped that they will recommend a consultation period for the town.
If you want to help, please write to DCC explaining why you want this to happen. You can go along to a positive, happy and peaceful demo at County Hall in Dorchester next Wednesday 2 December at 09.30 in support of a secondary school.

Christmas is Coming

Day 186
23 November 2009
These photos are of a few little bits hanging in the window of a shop in town called Candleworld. The window of this shop always looks gorgeous, I love looking at it and browsing in there. Today, as we were walking about town looking for an emergency pair of wellies for my daughter (it was almost dark by the time we finally managed to find a pair that were the correct size for her), we walked past and had to stop to look at the window.

Chilfrome

Day 185
22 November 2009
Despite the weather being really horrible, I decided that we needed to get out of the house and off somewhere different. So after consulting a guide to festive activities in Dorset, we headed to a tiny village outside Dorchester, called Chilfrome. It has 17 houses, a farm, and a church. Today they were holding their Christmas bazaar. We mooched about for an hour or two, bought some cheese, some cider apple juice, looked at some black Alpaca, a young blacksmith showing how to smith metal, took part in the lucky dip and tombola, and my little girl had her face painted. All in all, a successful afternoon!

Three fascinating facts about Alpaca: They come from Peru; they are part of the camel family; and a baby Alpaca is called a Cria. My daughter was very interested in them.

Toasted marshmallows

Day 184
21 November 2009

This evening we let our little girl stay up for a bit to enjoy some toasted marshmallows and watch some of Strictly Come Dancing. It's becoming a bit of a regular thing for her to watch it, and it is lovely to cosy up with her and talk about the different dances, costumes, and her favourites.

Square?

Day 183
20 November 2009

Our kitchen installation continues. Today my husband was sorting out the plumbing for our sink.
We live in a Victorian house, and when it was built, the walls weren't built square. So the kitchen cabinets have had to be adjusted as they've been fitted, to account for the skewed-ness. The sink is no different. There was a lot of headscratching and some swearing this afternoon, as he tried to fit the pipes. In the end, some old fashioned maths won the day!
