Ferry

Day 114
12 September 2009

This is the ferry that saves a trip "going round" to Poole or Bournemouth. The ferry, or floating bridge, is able to take vehicles and passengers across the entrance into Poole Harbour, saving a longer road trip. It's a bit of a false economy really, though, as it costs £3.00 (to be increased soon) per car. Many locals feel that this is an excessive charge, citing other similar modes of transportation across small stretches of water being far cheaper, blaming the Sandbanks label for the high price. It isn't necessarily quicker than going round, though, as the queues on busy days either side of the water can mean a long wait - but at least if the weather is good it's easier to just get out of the car and have a walk about.
Whatever the pros and cons are, it's definitely a novelty to be able to travel across to the other side, and have all of the lovely scenery to look at, on the way.

Brownsea Island. Dib Dib!

These are what stops the ferry drifting off to France.
